ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A judge, a son, a keeper of letters
The author was a United States District Judge for 24 years. After retiring he taught law at National Taiwan University in Taipei. He received a BS from Richmond College and a JD from Wake Forest University.
In his early career he served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, an Assistant United States Attorney, a United States Magistrate, and a lawyer in a private practice devoted primarily to federal litigation. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush appointed him to the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. The United States Senate unanimously confirmed him in May of that year

A friend, author, and a reliable critic wished I had said more about Tess and more about Sam’s and Tess’s lives together after the war.
I had thought of the story as an extraordinary moment in time — a snapshot of a great generation.
I could have said more about postwar celebrations, reunions, and the fulfillment of dreams. And I should have said more about Tess, the indispensable wife, mother, and unsung raison d'être.
It was she who counseled a soldier’s struggles through the seasons of his life. It was she who preserved the place he called home and in the closing chapter watched over him there — home, the place of his dreams in the cold and bleak midwinter on foreign fields of ice and mud.
